Workers’ Comp Insurance, CSLB Certificate, & Notice Requirements

70 / 142

Workers’ compensation insurance provides medical care, benefits, and wages to employees who are injured or sick due to work. Employers must carry workers’ comp for employees and keep proof on file with the CSLB.

Employers must have and pay for coverage: coverage is required once a business has employees, and the employer pays the premiums

Employees cannot be required to pay their own premiums

Certificate on file with the CSLB: a current, valid Certificate of Workers’ Compensation Insurance (or self-insurance) must always be on file

Automatic suspension: a lapse in coverage suspends the CSLB license automatically

The 90-day rule: the CSLB accepts a workers’ comp insurance certificate within 90 days of when coverage starts, and reinstates the license retroactively

Reporting employees to the carrier: each employee must be reported to the workers’ comp insurance carrier when hired

Coverage begins at the time of employment, not after an injury occurs

Written notice to employees: a written notice about workers’ comp benefits goes to new employees by the end of their first pay period

How to read a card

  • 1Card number. The number in the circle matches the same card in the apps.
  • 2Exam frequency. The more dots, the more often the topic shows up on the exam. Five dots means give it extra time.
  • 3The topic. The front names one exam topic, so you can quiz yourself before you flip.
  • 4The rule, in plain language. The back explains the rule with the exact numbers you'll be tested on.
  • 5Exam tip. Each card ends with a tip on how the test tries to trip you up on that topic.

One card, everywhere.

Card 01 on paper, on your phone and on your computer. Same number, same rule, same exam tip.

The method

How License Ladder works

License Ladder carefully measures your progress as you study, so you don't waste time on what you already know, and your study time goes where it matters most. It's built on spaced repetition, a study method that's been tested and proven to produce great results.

1

Measures your progress

Every card you mark and every answer you give updates your progress.

Familiar or new, right or wrong, it all counts toward your readiness score.

2

Skips what you know

Cards you've mastered come back less often.

So your time goes where it counts, not on rules you already have down.

3

Focuses where it matters

The topics you're still learning come first.

In your flashcards and in your practice tests, so every session counts.

The loop at a glance

Four simple steps. One powerful adaptive loop.

Every step feeds one number: your readiness score. The system tracks what you already know, finds what you don't, and tells you exactly what to study next. No guessing. No re-reading things you mastered last week.

That's the difference. A book treats every page the same. License Ladder treats you as the syllabus, and adapts.

1

Review your deck

Under 2 minutes a card. Skim the whole deck in a few honest hours.

2

Flag what's new

Mark each card Know It or New To Me. Your flags teach the system where to focus.

3

Take adaptive practice tests

Tests that help you focus where it matters most, so every session moves you closer to green.

4

Watch your readiness score go green

One honest number. When it's green, schedule your exam.

Our story

About License Ladder

We're a California company built by people who've stood on the jobsite and sat for the exam. Here's why we started, what makes us different, and who we're building this for.

A modern glass-fronted office building

Why we do this

License Ladder started with a simple, frustrating fact: the people who are best at the work are often stopped by the test. We watched skilled framers, plumbers, and electricians (folks who could run a job site in their sleep) get tripped up by dense legal language and trick exam wording that has nothing to do with building.

The old ways of studying made it worse. A 300-page binder that wastes your time, regardless of your experience. A classroom course built around someone else's schedule instead of yours. We knew there was a better path: simple flashcards, adaptive practice solutions, and a simple study plan that respects your valuable time.

License Ladder writes flashcards you can read in two minutes, study guides written the way you talk, and a powerful app that helps you focus where it matters most. Pass the test, get your license, and build something new that's truly yours.

How we're different

  • License Ladder adapts to you. Most prep treats everyone the same. Our system finds what you don't know and focuses your time there, so you study less and remember more.
  • Plain English, always. When a legal term is unavoidable, we define it in the same breath. No jargon for its own sake.
  • California first. We teach the rules you'll actually be tested on, including Cal/OSHA where it differs from the federal version.
  • Cards, guides, and app in one package. Study at lunch on paper, on your phone in the truck, or in your browser at home. One synced plan with honest, one-time pricing and no subscription.

How we've helped

Our goal is simple: help hardworking tradespeople pass on the first try and start building their own legacy. We stand behind that with a 99% pass rate guarantee: follow the plan, hit a green readiness score, and if you don't pass, you don't pay. Read the full guarantee.
