Licensing Requirements

Qualifying for Multiple Licenses & Reciprocity

Topic: License application & license status

California law lets one person qualify for more than one contractor's license, but only if they hold a real financial stake in each business they qualify for.

Requirement: up to 3 licenses, 20% equity minimum
  • You can qualify for up to three separate licenses if you own at least 20% of each business you're the qualifier for.
  • This stops people from lending their license to a business they aren't really part of.
Adding a classification: a licensee adds one by:
  1. Applying to the CSLB for the added classification; and
  2. Passing the trade exam for that classification.
License reciprocity: California has agreements with certain states, so a contractor licensed in one may get licensed in the other without retaking the full exam.
  • Reciprocity states: Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, and North Carolina.

The California exam

Two: the Law & Business exam, which every applicant takes, and a trade exam for your classification, like C-36 Plumbing or C-10 Electrical. You sit both the same day. The bundle prepares you for both.
You need roughly 73% to pass each exam. Our practice tests target an 80% readiness score so you walk in with margin to spare.
Each exam is multiple choice, roughly 115 questions, taken under a time limit.
CSLB generally requires four years of journey-level experience in your trade within the last 10 years. Apprenticeship, schooling, or running your own crew can count toward it.
California issues three: Class A (General Engineering), Class B (General Building), and Class C (Specialty), with 40-plus C classifications like C-10 Electrical and C-36 Plumbing.
In California, work where labor and materials total $1,000 or more generally requires a CSLB license. Smaller jobs may fall under the minor-work exemption, but advertising rules still apply. Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §7048
After you apply, expect roughly six weeks to be cleared to test, then you schedule your exam date. How fast you pass is the part you control, and the part we help with.
