After you apply · CSLB timeline

What happens after you apply for a California contractor license?

After you apply, CSLB mails an acknowledgment letter and reviews your application: it either returns it for correction (you get 90 days to fix it) or accepts ("posts") it. Acceptance brings a Live Scan packet, a Notice to Schedule and the start of your 18 months to pass both exams. On October 19, 2026, CSLB was working on exam applications received October 6, 2026. After you pass, a Bond and Fee letter lists what CSLB still needs.

Step by step

What happens after you send in your application, step by step?

CSLB acknowledges your application, reviews it, and accepts it or sends it back for fixes. Once it is accepted, you get fingerprinted and have 18 months to pass your exams with PSI. After you pass, you send the fee, bond and papers listed on CSLB's Bond and Fee letter, and CSLB issues the license. The table shows each step, with the time limit or CSLB's wait as of October 19, 2026.

From filing to license number. Queue dates come from CSLB's processing-times page as of Oct. 19, 2026; CSLB updates it weekly.

CSLB gives no total time from filing to license. It says processing times keep changing with the type of application, applications returned for corrections, workload and staff vacancies. The parts you control are your replies inside each deadline, and the exams.

The weekly queue

How do you read CSLB's processing-times page?

Each line on CSLB's processing-times page is the receipt date staff are working on for one kind of document, so it shows how far the line has moved, not your total wait. On October 19, 2026, the exam-applications line read October 6, 2026: applications that arrived 13 days earlier were being picked up. If CSLB received yours on or before the date shown, staff have reached it.

The lines that matter to a license applicant on CSLB's processing-times page, as of Oct. 19, 2026.

Bond Unit: Contractor BondsYour contractor bondOct. 15, 2026
Workers Compensation/Liability Insurance UnitYour workers' comp certificate or exemptionCertificates: Oct. 8, 2026. Exemptions: Oct. 15, 2026

CSLB's Board reports measure the same line another way. For original exam applications received from August 2025 to July 2026, CSLB reported monthly averages from 1.4 to 3.5 weeks before a technician first pulled the application for review, and 1.4 weeks for July 2026, the latest month in its September 2026 Board packet. That is the wait for the review to start, not to finish.

Two more things to know. CSLB's online status lookup is down every Sunday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday for maintenance. And because the page changes weekly, check the live page before you plan around a date.

Your status page

What do the words on your CSLB application status mean?

"Posted" means CSLB accepted your application as complete, and "referred for testing" means CSLB cleared you to test and mailed your Notice to Schedule. In CSLB's Board reports, "pending" means something is still open: your exams, an experience or background review, or your final papers. CSLB defines few other status words.

What CSLB says each term means. CSLB publishes no full list of status messages; for any other line, call CSLB at (800) 321-2752.

To look up your status, open CSLB's secured status page and enter the nine-digit application fee number and four-digit PIN from your acknowledgment letter, which CSLB says arrives within 4 to 6 weeks. After you file your bond, CSLB says you can follow your application with the same two numbers. CSLB mails the Notice to Schedule and the Bond and Fee letter, so keep your address current: PSI's bulletin says to notify CSLB in writing and allow 30 days for an address change.

After acceptance

What happens once CSLB accepts your application?

CSLB mails you a Live Scan fingerprint packet and a Notice to Schedule an Examination, and your 18 months to pass start. You then get fingerprinted, send CSLB its copy of the Live Scan form within 90 days, and book your exams with PSI.

Get fingerprinted, then mail the third copy

In California you are fingerprinted by Live Scan. You pay the Live Scan operator $49 in DOJ and FBI fees, plus the site's own rolling fee, which CSLB does not set. The operator keeps the first copy of the Request for Live Scan Service form, you keep the second, and the third goes to CSLB within 90 days after you receive the packet. Outside California, CSLB sends hard-copy cards, which take three to six months or longer.

Background results usually come back fast

DOJ and the FBI typically answer within two days, CSLB told its Board in September 2026. A delay does not necessarily mean a conviction: most clear within 30 days, some take 90 days or longer, and CSLB waits for the results before it issues a license. If your prints are rejected for quality, you are fingerprinted again; a second rejection leads to a name check, which can take a long time.

Book your exams with PSI

The Notice to Schedule explains how to book. You pick the date and test center and pay PSI directly, online at any hour or at (877) 392-6422. PSI's bulletins listed $51.43 per exam registration, first try or retake, as of October 16, 2026. You can take the two exams on the same day or on different days. What to expect on test day: exam day at a PSI test center.

Your experience can still be checked

By law, CSLB must review at least 3% of applications at random, and an investigation of work experience can start any time before the license is issued. You can still take and pass the exams while it runs, but CSLB will not issue the license until the experience is verified. What proof CSLB can ask for: the experience guide.

The clocks

Which deadlines can void your application after you apply?

Four deadlines can void a CSLB application after you apply. You get 90 days to fix a returned application and 90 days to mail CSLB your Live Scan form. You get 18 months from acceptance to pass your exams. After you pass, you get 90 days from CSLB's notice to pay the fee and file your bond. Miss one and you may have to start over, with a new application and a new $450 fee.

The 18-month window, explained. It starts the day CSLB accepts your application, and PSI's bulletin counts it from the date on the eligibility letter CSLB sends you. Inside it you can test as many times as you need, 21 calendar days apart, paying PSI each time. An attempt within three weeks of the void date is your last on that application. A passed exam stays good for five years, so if you reapply within those five years, you retake only the exam you have not passed. For a documented medical emergency or other circumstance beyond your control, CSLB may extend a void date up to 90 days.

How often do applications go void? CSLB's September 2026 Board packet lists 6,233 of the applications it received in fiscal year 2025-26 as voided, but that count mixes every application type, from exam and waiver applications to home improvement salespeople, and CSLB does not say why each one was voided. In July 2025, CSLB studied the most common reasons applications go void and developed two reminder letters for applicants: an Exam Scheduling Reminder and a License Issuance Checklist.

Bond and Fee letter

What is on CSLB's Bond and Fee letter after you pass?

CSLB's Bond and Fee letter lists what CSLB still needs before it issues your license. The initial license fee is $200 for a sole owner or $350 for other business types. An active license also needs a $25,000 contractor bond and workers' comp proof or an exemption, and every new licensee completes the asbestos open-book exam. The law gives you 90 days from the notice to send it all.

What the Bond and Fee letter can ask for, from CSLB's Issuing My License page. Your letter lists the items for your application.
ItemWho needs itAmount or how it is filed
Initial license feeEvery new license, active or inactive$200 sole owner; $350 partnership, corporation, LLC or joint venture. Covers two years.
Contractor bondActive licenses$25,000 bond from an insurance agent or a surety licensed by the California Department of Insurance, or a $25,000 cashier's check. CSLB does not issue bonds.
Bond of qualifying individualActive licenses whose qualifier is not the owner, a general partner or a joint licensee, such as an RME, unless an RMO or LLC qualifier owns at least 10% and certifies it$25,000
Workers' comp certificate or exemptionActive licenses. An exemption only with no employees and no RME qualifier, and never for C-8, C-20, C-22, C-39 or D-49Your insurer files the certificate with CSLB electronically; you file an exemption online. From Jan. 1, 2028, every active license needs coverage except a joint venture with no employees.
Asbestos open-book examEvery new licenseeCompleted and submitted before issuance; it can be taken on CSLB's website. It does not certify you for asbestos work.
LLC worker bond and liability insuranceActive LLC licenses$100,000 worker bond, plus liability insurance of at least $1 million for five or fewer listed personnel

Send everything together. CSLB asks for all the issuance documents together to avoid delays, and it cannot issue a license until every requirement is met. Under Business and Professions Code section 7074, an original application goes void if you do not pay the fee, or file the bond and other papers, within 90 days of CSLB's notice.

Then the Issuance Unit takes over. On October 19, 2026, it was working on final fees and documents received October 8, 2026. Staff also take a more detailed look at the whole application before issuing the license, and a work-experience investigation or a fingerprint delay can hold it. Your wall certificate and plastic pocket card arrive about one week after issuance, CSLB's Issuing My License page says; its Get Licensed to Build guide says 5 to 10 business days.

Until CSLB issues the license, you are not licensed. CSLB says the passing exam report is not a license, only an active license lets you contract in its classifications, and contracting without a license is a misdemeanor under section 7028. In California that covers any job of $1,000 or more, and smaller jobs that need a building permit or hired help, or if you advertise as a contractor. Keeping the license active: after you pass, in the exam guide.

Book PSI when your score turns green

Your readiness score turns green when you’re ready to pass. Reach green before your Notice to Schedule arrives, and you can book your exams with PSI the day it comes. Green is also the first condition of License Ladder’s pass guarantee.

Hold the bond and fee until CSLB asks

Do not send a bond or the initial license fee with your application; CSLB asks for them in the Bond and Fee letter after you pass. Bonds come from an insurance agent or a surety company licensed by the California Department of Insurance. An active LLC license also needs a $100,000 worker bond and liability insurance.

Plan your test dates

Each exam is 3½ hours, closed book, at a PSI test center. A failed exam can be retaken after 21 calendar days, and a test within three weeks of your void date is your last on that application, so leave room inside your 18 months. What to bring and what is banned: exam day at PSI.

FAQ

Questions people ask after they apply

CSLB says it mails a letter of acknowledgment within 4 to 6 weeks after you apply (CSLB Public Information FAQ, checked October 19, 2026). The letter gives you a nine-digit application fee number and a four-digit PIN. Use the fee number any time you contact CSLB about your application. Enter both numbers on CSLB's secured status page to see your status in more detail.

You check a CSLB application status online, on CSLB's secured status page, with the nine-digit application fee number and four-digit PIN from your acknowledgment letter; the fee number alone shows only the basics. CSLB's automated phone line, (800) 321-2752, also gives the dates staff are working on. CSLB's online lookup is down every Sunday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday for maintenance (checked October 19, 2026).

On a CSLB application, "posted" means CSLB has accepted it as complete. That is CSLB's own definition, on its Live Scan page. The posting date also starts your 18 months to pass the exams. After posting, CSLB mails each person on the application a Live Scan fingerprint packet, and you get a Notice to Schedule an Examination (checked October 19, 2026).

You know CSLB's first review is done when your Notice to Schedule an Examination arrives. CSLB's Public Information FAQ says the notice comes after CSLB reviews and accepts your application. If your exam is waived, you get a request for more papers and the license fee instead. If the review finds a problem, CSLB sends the application back, and you have 90 days to fix it and send it in again (checked October 19, 2026).

No. CSLB's Examinations FAQ says only applications it has deemed acceptable, and that need exams, are referred for testing, so you cannot pre-schedule a CSLB exam with PSI. Once CSLB refers you, it mails a Notice to Schedule an Examination, and you book and pay PSI yourself, online or at (877) 392-6422. PSI's bulletins listed $51.43 per exam registration as of October 16, 2026.

The CSLB Notice to Schedule arrives after CSLB accepts your application. CSLB gives no set number of days. Its Get Licensed to Build guide says CSLB tells you once the application is processed and found acceptable. For the current pace, check CSLB's processing-times page: on October 19, 2026, staff were on exam applications received October 6, 2026.

CSLB may void your application. CSLB's Live Scan page says you must send it the third copy of the Request for Live Scan Service form within 90 days after you receive the packet that contained it, and that failing to do so may result in your application being voided. The CSLB 90 days run from the day the packet reaches you, not from the day you applied (checked October 19, 2026).

The CSLB fingerprint check usually comes back within two days. CSLB's September 2026 Board packet says the California DOJ and the FBI typically respond within two days of an applicant being fingerprinted. A delay does not necessarily mean a conviction: most delays clear within 30 days, some take 90 days or longer, and CSLB must wait for the results before it issues a license. Hard-copy cards used outside California take three to six months or longer.

Yes. CSLB's Public Information FAQ says you can still take and pass the exams if CSLB picks your application for a closer look at your work experience. But CSLB will not issue the license until it verifies that experience and you meet every other requirement. CSLB can pick an application any time before the license is issued. By regulation, CSLB must investigate at least 3% of applications, and claimed experience must be verifiable through payroll records or similar documents (checked October 19, 2026).

Yes. CSLB's Examinations FAQ and Business and Professions Code section 7074 both say an application is void if you have not passed within 18 months after CSLB accepts (posts) it, not after you mail it. You would file a new application and pay the fees again. A passed exam still counts for five years, so if you reapply within that time, you retake only the other one. For a documented medical emergency or other event beyond your control, CSLB may extend a void date up to 90 days.

You have 90 days from the date of CSLB's notice. Business and Professions Code section 7074, printed in CSLB's 2026 Law Book, voids an original application if you don't pay the license fee within 90 days of that notice. The same 90 days apply to filing your bond and the other papers needed for the license. CSLB mails the Bond and Fee letter after you pass and asks you to send every item together.

You get the $25,000 contractor bond from an insurance agent or a bond company licensed by the California Department of Insurance. CSLB does not sell bonds (CSLB, Issuing My License). You can deposit a $25,000 cashier's check with CSLB instead. CSLB says most bonds run one to three years. Once your bond is filed, you can track your application with your fee number and PIN (checked October 19, 2026). The exam guide covers the other steps after you pass.

Your insurance company files the workers' comp certificate with CSLB online. Only insurers licensed to sell workers' comp in California can file one (CSLB Public Information FAQ). If you have no employees, you file CSLB's online exemption form instead. You can't use the exemption if your qualifier is a responsible managing employee or you hold a C-8, C-20, C-22, C-39 or D-49 license. From January 1, 2028, every active CSLB license needs coverage except a joint venture with no employees (SB 1455).

You turn in CSLB's asbestos open-book exam before your license is issued. CSLB's Issuing My License page says the exam and its verification form must be completed and submitted before licensure, and that CSLB cannot issue a license without them, under Business and Professions Code section 7058.5. You can take it on CSLB's website. It appears on the Bond and Fee letter's list, and completing it does not certify you for asbestos work.

CSLB gives no fixed time. It depends on when you send the Bond and Fee items and how fast CSLB's queue moves. On October 19, 2026, CSLB's Issuance Unit was working on final fees and documents received October 8, 2026 (CSLB Processing Times). Staff also take a more detailed look before issuing, and an experience check or fingerprint delay can hold the license. Your wall certificate and pocket card follow about one week after issuance (CSLB's guide says 5 to 10 business days).

You receive a wall certificate and a plastic pocket card from CSLB. The certificate shows who holds the license, the license number, the classifications and the issue date. The card shows the number, business name, classifications and expiration date. CSLB's Issuing My License page says both arrive about one week after the license is issued. The law says to display the certificate in your main office. A new license lasts two years (checked October 19, 2026).

Study with License Ladder, used as directed, because once CSLB accepts your application, your 18 months to pass are already running (CSLB Examinations FAQ). Study the printed cards and digital guides 20 minutes a day, and work the practice questions and timed mock exams until your readiness score turns green, so you can book PSI as soon as your Notice to Schedule arrives.
