Contractor school · Is it required?

Do you need a contractor school to get a California license?

No. CSLB requires no school: there are no education or course requirements for a license, and no school is affiliated with CSLB. What you need is to pass two exams. License Ladder is built to get you there, used as directed: 20 minutes a day, at home or on your phone, until your readiness score is green. It costs a fraction of what you might expect, in one payment: Law & Business for $99, or add General Building for $50 more ($149 total).

The rule

Does CSLB require you to go to a contractor school?

No. CSLB says you are not required to go to school to take or pass the exam, there are no education or course requirements for a license, and no school or application preparation service is affiliated with CSLB. Each document below says part of this, in CSLB’s own words.

What CSLB says about contractor schools, in its own words
CSLB documentWhat it says
Preparing for the Exam, handout 13P-104 (March 2026)“You are not required to go to school to take or pass the exam, and there are no schools or application preparation services that are officially affiliated with CSLB.”
Get Licensed to Build, 2025 edition“There are no specific educational or course requirements to get a California contractor license. CSLB is not affiliated with any license preparation schools and cannot make recommendations about them.”
Qualifying Experience for the Examination, CSLB web page“You do not have to meet any education requirements in order to qualify for a contractor license.”
Examinations FAQ, asked which school CSLB recommends“Please be aware that there are no schools or application preparation organizations that are affiliated with or agents of CSLB.”
Application form 13A-1 (rev. 01/2026), Important NoticeNo school or application preparation organization is affiliated with CSLB, “although some may have company names that are confusingly similar to CSLB.” If one claims a CSLB tie, CSLB says to complain to CSLB or the California Department of Consumer Affairs.

What CSLB does require includes at least four years of journey-level experience in your classification within the last 10 years, a $450 application fee, and passing the Law and Business exam plus a trade exam, unless a waiver applies. The C-61 Limited Specialty classification has no trade exam. The full licensing path.

What you do need

What do you need instead of a school?

Readiness for two closed-book exams: Law and Business and the trade exam for your classification, unless a waiver applies. Each is multiple choice, with 3½ hours to finish, and you have 18 months after CSLB accepts your application to pass. Neither exam is a formality, so prepare to pass the first time.

Law and Business tests business law

CSLB says the Law and Business exam covers business management and construction law, not your trade. Its outline gives approximate weights: contracts 21%, employment 20%, business finances 15%, safety 14%, business organization and licensing 13%, insurance and liens 12% and public works 5%. What each section covers.

Closed book, on the clock

Every CSLB exam is multiple choice, with four answer choices per question, taken on a computer at a PSI test center. Law and Business and the trade exams are closed book, with 3½ hours for each exam and no penalty for guessing.

Not a formality

In fiscal year 2022/23, the most recent year for which CSLB has published per-exam pass rates, 57% of Law and Business candidates and 44% of General Building (B) candidates passed, according to CSLB’s 2023 Sunset Review Report.

Retakes cost time and money

You have 18 months from CSLB’s acceptance of your application to pass. A failed exam can be retaken after 21 calendar days, for PSI’s $51.43 each time, and in 2022/23, 71% of first attempts passed against 37% of retakes. How retakes work.

License Ladder, used as directed

How does License Ladder get you ready to pass?

Use it as directed: study the printed cards and digital study guides, and work the app’s practice questions and timed mock exams until your readiness score turns green. Then take the exam. The plan is 20 minutes a day. Reaching green is also the first condition of the pass guarantee.

  1. 1

Study the cards and the guides

Printed flashcards: 142 in the Law & Business deck and 177 in the General Building (B) deck, 319 with both decks, shipped free. Every order includes digital study guides. Read real cards.

  2. 2

    Practice the way CSLB tests

Work the app’s practice questions and timed mock exams. CSLB’s exams are closed book, with 3½ hours for each, so practice on the clock and without notes. Take the free CSLB practice test.

  3. 3

    Keep going until you’re green

The app gives you a readiness score. Study 20 minutes a day, and when the score turns green, you’re ready to pass. In the online system, the AI Exam Coach answers your questions while you study.

  4. 4

    Then take the exam

Reach green before the exam and take it within 12 months of purchase. If you don’t pass, send the official result within 60 days and your purchase is refunded. That is the pass guarantee.

Every step, screen by screen: how License Ladder works.

FAQ

Questions people ask about contractor school and exam prep

No. CSLB’s Preparing for the Exam handout says, “You are not required to go to school to take or pass the exam,” and its Get Licensed to Build guide says there are no education or course requirements for a license. What CSLB does require includes at least four years of journey-level work in the last 10 years and passing its exams, unless a waiver applies. License Ladder is built for those exams: use it as directed until your readiness score is green.

You don’t need one. CSLB’s Get Licensed to Build guide says there are no education or course requirements for a California contractor license. What you need is to pass CSLB’s exams. License Ladder gets you ready for a fraction of what you might expect. It is one payment: Law & Business for $99, or add General Building for $50 more ($149 total). That covers printed cards, digital study guides and one year of the app.

License Ladder, used as directed. Study the printed flashcards and digital study guides, then work the app’s practice questions and timed mock exams until your readiness score turns green, about 20 minutes a day. It covers Law and Business and General Building (B), and the AI Exam Coach in the online system answers your questions. Reaching green is also the first condition of the pass guarantee.

Yes. CSLB says you are not required to go to school to take or pass the exam (CSLB, Preparing for the Exam). On your own, you need a system, and License Ladder is one: study the printed cards and digital study guides, then work the app’s practice questions and timed mock exams until your readiness score is green. Use it as directed, 20 minutes a day, on your own schedule, at home or on your phone.

Yes. CSLB has no course requirement for a license (Get Licensed to Build), and License Ladder pairs printed flashcards with digital study guides and one year of the app: practice questions, timed mock exams, a readiness score and the AI Exam Coach in the online system. The Law & Business deck has 142 cards and the General Building (B) deck has 177. Used as directed until your score is green, it gets you ready to pass.

Material for your exams, and practice in CSLB’s format: multiple choice, closed book, 3½ hours per exam (CSLB Examinations FAQ). License Ladder has both. You get printed cards for Law & Business and General Building (B), plus digital study guides. One year of the app adds practice questions, timed mock exams and a readiness score. When the score turns green, you’re ready to pass.

Use License Ladder as directed, 20 minutes a day: study the printed cards and digital study guides, then work the app’s practice questions and timed mock exams until your readiness score turns green. Short sessions fit around work, and the iPhone app and the online system go wherever you are. Practice on the clock too: CSLB gives you 3½ hours for each multiple-choice exam (CSLB Examinations FAQ).

Prepare to pass the first time. Each retake is another PSI registration at $51.43 and at least a 21-day wait, and in fiscal year 2022/23, 71% of first attempts at CSLB exams passed against 37% of retakes (CSLB 2023 Sunset Review Report). License Ladder is built for that first pass, for one payment: Law & Business for $99, or add General Building for $50 more ($149 total).

No. A CSLB study guide is an outline of the exam, not a course. CSLB’s Examinations FAQ says each guide lists the topic areas, includes sample questions and shows how each area is weighted; the Law and Business guide, 13E-LAW (03-2026), gives three sample questions. To prepare, use License Ladder as directed: cards, digital study guides, practice questions and timed mock exams until your readiness score is green.

Yes. License Ladder works at home and wherever you are. You get printed cards shipped free, digital study guides, the free iPhone app and the online system, where the AI Exam Coach answers your questions. The CSLB exams themselves are not online. You take them in person at a PSI test center: 20 in California and one in Wilsonville, Oregon, plus out-of-state sites for Law and Business and a few trade exams (CSLB, Preparing for the Exam).

You don’t need one nearby. CSLB requires no school, and its Get Licensed to Build guide says CSLB “cannot make recommendations” about license prep schools. License Ladder comes to you instead: printed cards with free shipping, digital study guides and the app on your phone. The only place you have to go in person is a PSI test center, to take the exams themselves.

You don’t need a class to prepare in Spanish. License Ladder’s site and app run in Spanish, its cards are printed in Spanish, and the Exam Coach in the online system answers in Spanish. CSLB offers 10 exams in Spanish, including Law and Business and General Building (B) (CSLB Examinations FAQ), and requires no school for any of them.

No. CSLB requires no school for any of its exams. Law and Business is the only exam for C-61 Limited Specialty applicants, and reciprocity can waive the trade exam but not Law and Business, unless you passed it in the last five years. CSLB’s outline for it is led by contracts at about 21% and employment at 20%. License Ladder for Law & Business covers it: 142 printed cards, digital study guides and a year of the app, $99.

No class is required, but you do need to prepare. The CSLB Law and Business exam covers business management and construction law, not your trade: contracts about 21%, employment 20%, business finances 15% and safety 14%. In fiscal year 2022/23, 57% of Law and Business candidates passed (CSLB 2023 Sunset Review Report). License Ladder’s 142-card Law & Business deck and app practice, used as directed until you’re green, cover that material.

No. CSLB requires no school or class for any exam (CSLB, Preparing for the Exam). But the General Building (B) exam takes real preparation. In fiscal year 2022/23, 44% of its 7,243 candidates passed (CSLB 2023 Sunset Review Report). License Ladder covers both exams a B applicant takes. Law & Business is $99, and adding General Building is $50 more ($149 total). You get 177 General Building cards, 142 Law & Business cards, digital study guides and one year of the app.

Yes. License Ladder’s pass guarantee refunds your purchase when you meet its terms. Reach a green readiness score before the exam, and take the exam within 12 months of purchase. If you don’t pass, send the official result within 60 days. CSLB also lets you retake a failed exam after 21 calendar days, inside your 18-month window, paying PSI’s $51.43 again (CSLB Examinations FAQ).

No. CSLB’s application form 13A-1 says no school or application preparation organization is affiliated with CSLB or acts as its agent. It warns that “some may have company names that are confusingly similar to CSLB.” If a company claims a link to CSLB, the form says to report it to CSLB or the California Department of Consumer Affairs. CSLB’s part is the testing: Law and Business and your trade exam, unless a waiver applies.

No. CSLB’s Get Licensed to Build guide (2025 edition) says CSLB is not affiliated with any license preparation school and “cannot make recommendations about them.” Its Examinations FAQ adds that no school or application preparation organization is an agent of CSLB. So no school carries CSLB’s approval. What counts with CSLB is passing its exams. License Ladder, used as directed until your readiness score is green, is built for exactly that.

No. CSLB says: “You do not have to meet any education requirements in order to qualify for a contractor license.” A related degree can still count toward CSLB’s four years of experience. An A.A. in building or construction management can count for up to 1½ years, and some four-year degrees for up to 2 or 3 years. At least one year must be hands-on work experience (CSLB, Qualifying Experience for the Examination). How the credit works.
